If you would turn to 2nd Timothy chapter 1. We’re going to be focusing on one verse this morning, verse number 5, and I want to talk to you for just a few minutes this morning about ''A Mother's Influence.''
ILLUS: Abraham Lincoln said, ''No one is poor who had a godly mother.'' He went on to say, ''I remember my mother's prayers, and they have followed me; they have clung to me all my life. All that I am and hope to be I owe to my angel mother.''
A mother's influence.
We're here this morning to celebrate Mother's Day. And by the way, if you haven't called Mom yet, here’s a bit of encouragement - call your mom. And all the mom's said? Amen.
We're here to celebrate the day that has been set aside, as President Woodrow Wilson said on May 9, 1914 when congress declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. President Wilson said that this day has been set aside as a time for ''public expression of our love and reverence for the mother's of our country.'' It is a holiday dedicated to peace.
With all that our mother's do for us while we're growing up and even after we leave our residences and go off on our trail of life, they deserve at least one day out of the year to be honored and to have gifts and calls and cards sent to them.
Have you ever thought about all of the roles that your mother filled while you were growing up? I just jotted down a few - and this list is by no means exhaustive. Nurse, counselor, spiritual advisor, educator, nutritionist, accountant, transportation center, maid, peacemaker, entertainer. There are so many other roles that our mothers fulfill each and every day.
And so, today, on Mother's Day, we want to say “thank you” to all of our mothers for all that you do for us with your undying love. You show peace when deep inside you may sometimes be feeling a war going on. But you keep it to yourself just to keep the peace. Love pours out of your soul like hot gold being poured in a vat.
In 2 Timothy 1, here we have a well-known Apostle, Apostle Paul, writing to a young, new preacher on things that are needed for the church to grow in grace and the very first subject is on … Mothers. He addresses Pastor Timothy in the first 4 verses, and then on his Maternal Influences with sincerity. He speaks of Pastor Timothy’s Grandmother AND his Mother’s Faith. This popular Apostle (not without persecution of course,) actually “called-out” Lois and Eunice and told Pastor Timothy that he is persuaded that he too has a meek and gentle heart like his Maternal side. Now note, he is not going too far like some religions do today and make the Women gods, so-to-speak, so let’s be careful of doing that. There is only one Creator with 3 characters, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Paul is only commending them of their faithfulness to the Kingdom. We have to watch who we place on pedastals. He is not telling people to bow down, pray to and worship these women. Let’s not get it twisted. Even Jesus corrected a Mary-izer in:
27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us not forget who the Creator of Mother’s is. Let’s give God all the props and thank Him for the Mother’s amen?! In fact a female was the first to announce the resurrection of our Savior. They just ‘knew better.’ lol. The men were hiding in fear! But that’s another story.
The very first recommendation that Paul gives about the women in Timothy’s life was about Faith. People remember you when you show yourself faithful. If you want to be used as an example, have and show faith in God. Show faith in the work of the Cross that Jesus Christ did for us all. So many people ‘talk’ God but they don’t ‘show’ God in their lives yet they expect for others to come to the foot of the Cross. If you preach Jesus and don’t show it in your private life or you chase every skirt, (and vice versa,) you can find, (and now-a-day, that could be male or female,) who is going to come to the foot of the Cross and believe and serve Jesus? God likes things done decently and in order and that is out of order. He will not move on chaos. You are in God’s way by walking down the crooked path that He intends to end soon and get it out of His face! I am totally sure that God is not enjoying the fact that some people will go to Hell. I know that He will be relieved to get that out of the way so that the strong and sometimes weary, but believing Children can enjoy Heaven and get this party started!
And to the disobedient: how can you be a great example for the Kingdom of Heaven and you can’t even take correction from your parents? Who is going to follow and believe in a person who disrespects authority with no repentance? To the ladies out there, judge a man’s heart according to the way he treats his mother. If he respects her, whether she is good or bad, he will most likely respect you. If he dogs his mother out, he just may have a problems with authority or problems with females. I’ve known some who are misogynists because deep inside they have unforgiveness of some sort for their mothers. Now, some have done their mothers wrongly, I know that I have. At some point in life, we probably all have disappointed our moms in some way, but I know when a mistake has been made and I have sense enough and gratefulness enough to repent and I believe that the Lord has forgiven me. We have to be careful of who we judge. Which of us can judge who has been forgiven and who hasn’t? Ask for forgiveness and let go and let God. Someone can be holding a grudge against another who has asked the Lord to forgive them years ago. And here, the accuser sits with sickness and death upon them and bad health because they could not forgive someone that God forgave years ago! If He forgave them, can’t we? What makes us so high and mighty to not forgive someone else. Here’s something for you that I’ve noticed lately that many believers are forgetting. I’ve seen some, horribly ‘call out’ others on social media, and so forth, and it doesn’t make others look bad, it makes them look bad. The only ones to follow them are those who are just like them. You will know them by their fruit and I am not talking about numbers here.
Matthew 18:15-17 does NOT include “sneak-dissing.”
15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
